Interviews with the Apollo Lunar Surface Astronauts in Support of Planning for EVA Systems Design

نویسنده

  • Mary M. Connors
چکیده

Focused interviews were conducted with the Apollo astronauts who landed on the Moon. The purpose of these interviews was to help define extravehicular activity (EVA) system requirements for future lunar and planetary missions. Information from the interviews was examined with particular attention to identifying areas of consensus, since some commonality of experience is necessary to aid the design of advanced systems. Results are presented under the following categories: mission approach; training; and general comments. Research recommendations are offered, along with supporting information.

Astronaut Lunar Field Exploration Training

Introduction: Astronauts have not explored the lunar surface since December 1972. NASA's new plans for the manned return to the Moon revolve around the construction and establishment of a lunar polar outpost starting around the year 2020. Therefore, in order to achieve NASA's new exploration objectives it seems prudent to dust off certain aspects of the Apollo playbook. The six Apollo lunar lan...

Organics in Apollo Lunar Samples

Introduction: One of many unknowns prior to the Apollo landings concerned the possibility of life, its remains, or its organic precursors on the surface of the Moon. While the existence of lunar organisms was considered highly unlikely, a program of biological quarantine and testing for the astronauts, the Apollo Command Modules, and the lunar rock and soil samples , was instituted in the Lunar...

Mission Planning and Re-planning for Planetary Extravehicular Activities: Analysis of Excursions in a Mars-Analog Environment and Apollo Program

Future planetary extravehicular activities (EVAs) will go beyond what was experienced during Apollo. As mission duration becomes longer, inevitably, the astronauts on the surface of the Moon and Mars will actively plan and re-plan their own sorties. To design robust decision support aids for these activities, we have to first characterize all the different types of excursions that are possible....

Developing Lunar Access 1 Running head: SPACECRAFT DESIGN REQUIREMENTS VIA CONTENT ANALYSIS Developing Lunar Landing Vehicle Display Requirements through Content Analysis of Apollo Lunar Landing Voice Communications

The lengthy period since the Apollo landings limits present-day engineers attempting to draw from the experiences of veteran Apollo engineers and astronauts in the design of a new lunar lander. In order to circumvent these limitations, content analyses were performed on the voice transcripts of the Apollo lunar landing missions. The analyses highlighted numerous inefficiencies in the design of ...

Dressed for Success: Eva System Competancy and Containment for Science Capabilities and Contamination

Introduction: The key to significant lunar science and exploration return lies in supplying the crews on the surface with a robust EVA capability. This capability should include high mobility pressure garments; tactile, dexterous gloves; reduced overhead in preparing for and recovering from EVAs; management of regolith contamination; and control of suit leakage to prevent planetary contaminatio...
